Foot Massage Therapy
Here is your step-by-step reflexology foot massage therapy guide. I've provided diagrams to help you. I've broken down the routine into four sections. This is the second section, treating the heart, lungs, and shoulders. Sections one, three, and four can be easily found as you scroll down.
Foot Massage Therapy Routine

- Blue -- head, brain, sinus, thyroid, stating and ending points of five meridians
- Green -- heart
- Orange -- right lung and bronchioles
- Yellow -- shoulder, including joint, muscles and ligaments
- Check for contraindications.
- Warm up the foot and ankle with basic Swedish stokes: gliding, kneading, and movement.
- Perform gentle squeezes, twists, pulls, and brushing of the toes [detailed in section one below]
- Do thumb opposition gliding and gentle compressions with circular movements all over the area's colored in
- thumb walk the heart
- trough through the bronchioles and the lungs
- perform the lung pump: your soft left fist placed onto the lung area, your right hand clasping the foot and your left thumb.
Gently push the ankle into dorsi-flexion, then gently pull the ankle into plantar-flexion. Repeat twenty one times. - Squeeze and knead the outside edge of the foot, just below the little toe [shoulder]
- end this section with pinpoint-and-flex techniques all along the diaphragm map-line.
- Repeat on the other foot, noting that the heart zone is much smaller on the right foot.

Complete Reflexology Foot Massage Therapy RoutineHere's an introductory, step-by-step routine for reflexology foot massage therapy of the plantar surface of the feet. - Toes -- head, brain, sinus, thyroid, starting and ending points of five meridians
- Balls of Feet -- heart, lungs, bronchioles, shoulder muscles, joint, and ligaments
- Middle of Foot -- stomach, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, liver, gall bladder, intestines, urinary bladder, kidney
- Heel -- pelvic bones, joints, and muscles, including the sciatic nerves
Check for contraindications before starting your reflexology foot massage: fungus, cuts, bruises, recent surgery, ingrown toe nails, swelling, redness, etc.
- Using your oil of choice, warm up the foot and ankle with basic Swedish stokes: gliding, kneading, and gentle stretches.
- Take each toe in turn, gently squeeze, twist, and pull.
- Perform toe brushing: softly brushing the tips of the toes with your palm.
- On the top, bottoms, and sides of the toes, perform thumb and finger walking. Small "inch worm" movements from tip of the toe to the base.
- Gently stretch the toes. Stretch and knead the calf muscles and Achilles tendon.
- Perform thumb gliding and gentle compressions with circular movements all over the balls of the foot.
- Thumb-walk the heart zone, and trough through the bronchioles and the lungs
- Perform the lung-pump: place your soft fist onto the balls of the foot, the lungs. With the other hand, hold the foot and gently push the ankle into dorsi-flexion, then gently pull the ankle into plantar-flexion. Repeat twenty one times.
- Squeeze and knead the outside edge of the foot, just below the small toe. Helps to relax the shoulders.
- Perform gentle, light compressions throughout middle of the foot and the arch.
- Thumb-walk the stomach and spleen on the left foot, and the liver and gall bladder on the right.
- Use the simple Hook-in-and-back-up technique on the adrenal glands, roughly center of the arch of the foot: softly compress with your thumb, drag it down a quarter of an inch, release. Repeat this technique ten times.
- Circular movements and thumb glides all over this area of the foot.
- Rub the spine. The whole medial, or inside edge of the foot is the spinal column, muscles, and vertebrae. Briskly rub back and forth along this edge, using your palm, starting at the top of the big to to the end of the heel.
- Perform spinal twists, gentle movements of the foot, not the ankle.
- Squeeze and knead the outside edge of the foot to effect all joints of the body. Great foot massage therapy technique to stimulate synovial fluid release.
- Perform gentle, light compressions with fingers or thumbs on the heel.
- Do thumb opposition glides across the heel to the middle of the foot. Use a bit more pressure here.
- Knuckle heel: using your knuckles, or a reflexology tool, compress, do circular movements, and rubbing of the heel.
- Milk heel: grasp the heel with your whole hand, squeeze and glide down and off the heel. Repeat ten times.
- Thumb-walk the sciatic nerve, found running horizontally across the center of the heel. Repeat several times.
- Perform Hook-in-and-back-up and compressions with circular motions on the urinary bladder.
- Repeat Thumb-walking the whole area.
- Squeeze and knead all along the outside edge of the foot.
- Thumb glide all along the diaphragm map lines.
- Cover this foot with a towel, and repeat the above steps on the other foot.
- End the whole reflexology foot massage therapy routine by placing your palms on the soles of the feet for one minute.
